How to Get a Medical Certificate for College: Complete Student Guide
A practical guide for college students on getting medical certificates for absence, attendance condonation, or missed exams — including university-specific rules for DU, Mumbai, Anna and VTU.
Indian colleges require medical certificates for any extended absence, missed examinations, or to apply for attendance condonation under the prescribed minimum attendance norms. Submitting the wrong format is the single biggest reason students lose semester credits.
Step 1 — Check your university's specific rules
Delhi University requires certificates from a CGHS-empanelled doctor or government dispensary for attendance condonation. Mumbai University accepts certificates from any registered MBBS doctor but demands a separate gazetted officer attestation for medical board cases. Anna University and VTU prefer certificates from government hospital medical officers for exam re-tests.
Step 2 — Visit the right doctor
For routine sick leave, an NMC-registered MBBS doctor is sufficient. For attendance condonation under university rules, prefer a government hospital, civil surgeon or CGHS dispensary. For long-term illness involving more than 20 days, an additional certificate from a specialist (e.g. orthopaedic for fracture, psychiatrist for mental health) strengthens the application.
Step 3 — Mandatory content for college certificates
- Student name as it appears in the university record
- University enrolment or registration number
- Specific illness or injury with clinical wording
- Exact start and end date of medical unfitness
- Doctor's name, qualifications, NMC number, signature and stamp
- Date of issue (must be within the period of illness, not afterwards)
Step 4 — Submit to your college within deadlines
Most universities require submission within 7 days of return to college. The certificate goes through the class advisor, department head, and finally the attendance committee. Late submissions are routinely rejected and the absence is marked unexcused.
Step 5 — For missed examinations
Missed-exam medical applications usually require a medical certificate plus a doctor's prescription, hospital admission summary (if any), and an application addressed to the Controller of Examinations. Re-test fees apply and many universities allow only one re-test per subject.
Common rejection reasons
Backdated certificates, certificates from non-NMC practitioners, certificates missing the registration number or stamp, certificates without specific dates, and certificates submitted after the university deadline are the top reasons applications are rejected.
