Matriculation Certificate — What It Is and Why It Matters in India

9 min read Last updated May 2026·By the MedCertGen editorial team

A matriculation certificate is your Class 10 passing certificate issued by your board. Understand what it means, what it contains, and when you will need it in life.

The matriculation certificate is the official passing certificate issued by a school education board on successful completion of Class 10. In different parts of India it is called the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC), the Madhyamik Pareeksha certificate, or simply the 10th class passing certificate.

What the certificate contains

  • Student's full name and parent's name
  • Roll number and registration number
  • Date of birth (this becomes the authoritative DOB record)
  • Subjects taken and marks obtained
  • Overall percentage and division
  • Year and month of passing
  • Name of the board (CBSE, ICSE, State Board)
  • Signatures of the Chairman and Secretary
  • Embossed seal of the board

Why it is the single most important certificate in India

In Indian law and administrative practice, the date of birth recorded on the Class 10 certificate is treated as the authoritative DOB. Passport applications, government job applications, driving licences, court records and life insurance policies all rely on the matriculation DOB. Disputed DOBs can only be corrected through the issuing board with extensive evidence.

Where you will need it through life

  • Class 11 admission
  • College admission (Class 12 board accepts matriculation as part of admission)
  • Passport application
  • Driving licence application
  • Government job applications
  • Higher education admissions (UG, PG)
  • Visa applications
  • Pension and retirement age verification
  • Court and legal proceedings requiring DOB

Duplicate matriculation certificate

CBSE, ICSE and state boards issue duplicate certificates on application. The applicant files a prescribed form, submits an affidavit declaring loss, publishes a newspaper notice in two newspapers (one English and one regional), pays the prescribed fee (₹200–₹2,000), and waits 4–8 weeks for the duplicate.

DigiLocker access

CBSE and several state boards have made matriculation certificates available on DigiLocker. Students can download the digital version using their Aadhaar-linked DigiLocker account. DigiLocker copies are accepted as legally valid in all government and most private workflows under the Information Technology Act.
