Birth Certificate — Online Application & Importance in India

8 min read Updated February 2026·By the MedCertGen editorial team

Birth certificate is the primary proof of date of birth in India. Learn how to apply for a new certificate, late registration, and online services through state portals.

A birth certificate is a vital record issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. It is the primary proof of date of birth for school admission, Aadhaar, passport, driving licence and dozens of other applications.

When and where to register

Every birth must be registered within 21 days at the hospital where the birth occurred (for institutional deliveries) or at the local municipal corporation/panchayat office (for home births). Hospitals typically file the registration through the Civil Registration System (CRS) within 7–14 days.

Documents required for registration

  • Discharge summary or proof of birth from hospital
  • Parents' Aadhaar cards
  • Parents' marriage certificate (where available)
  • Address proof — utility bill, ration card
  • Photograph of the parents
  • Self-declaration by parents (for home births)

How to obtain the certificate

For institutional births, the hospital provides a certificate (sometimes called the Medical Certificate of Birth) which the parents use to register with the local Registrar. Once registered, the actual birth certificate is issued within 30 days. Most states now offer downloadable digital birth certificates through DigiLocker.

Late registration

If the birth is not registered within 21 days, it can be registered up to one year with the permission of the local Registrar. Beyond one year, registration requires an order from a First Class Magistrate or SDM under Section 13(3) of the RBD Act. Documents required include school certificate (for older applicants), affidavit from parents, and supporting evidence.

Online application through state portals

  • Maharashtra — Aaple Sarkar (aaplesarkar.mahaonline.gov.in)
  • Delhi — e-District Delhi
  • Karnataka — Karnataka One
  • Tamil Nadu — TN e-Sevai
  • West Bengal — e-District
  • Uttar Pradesh — eSathi
  • Many municipal corporations — own portals (BMC, MCG, etc.)

Correction in birth certificate

For corrections in name, date of birth, parent's name, or address, file an application at the same Registrar office with supporting evidence (affidavit, school records, identity documents). Major corrections may require Magistrate approval under Section 15 of the RBD Act.

  • School admission (most schools insist on it)
  • Aadhaar enrolment for children
